Gudang Cafe is a striking example of adaptive reuse in the heart of George Town’s heritage district. Housed in a former 1950s warehouse, the space maintains a raw, industrial aesthetic featuring exposed brick, high ceilings, and weathered wood.
The undisputed centerpiece of the cafe is its 45-foot long Chengal wood table, which provides a communal dining experience and acts as a beacon for both large groups and solo travelers looking for a spot to park their laptops. The interior is fully air-conditioned, providing a much-needed sanctuary from the tropical heat for those exploring the nearby Armenian Street murals.
The menu is a thoughtful blend of Japanese and Western cuisines with a local twist. You can find hearty options like Spicy Ramen and Chicken Ninniku Age Don alongside specialty coffee sourced from Chiang Mai.
For those with a sweet tooth, the cafe offers a rotating selection of cakes and pastries, including their signature Almond Tiramisu and Salted Caramel Macadamia Cheesecake. Despite its grand scale, the atmosphere remains chill and welcoming, though the acoustic nature of the warehouse means it can get lively and noisy during the peak lunch rush.
If you are planning to get some work done, the long central table is your best bet for space, though you should arrive early to secure a spot near the limited power plugs. For a more private or romantic experience, aim for a dinner visit when the lighting dims and the crowd thins significantly compared to the afternoon.
Since parking is extremely scarce on Gat Lebuh Armenian, consider using a ride-hailing service or parking further away in a public MBPP lot and enjoying a short walk through the heritage zone. Don’t forget to try their Dinosaur drink, a creamy chocolate and peanut butter signature that is a favorite among regulars.
Finding a spot right outside can be a bit of a treasure hunt because we are located in a very popular tourist area. There are a few public parking slots along the street, but they fill up fast. We usually suggest our guests try the commercial shared parking on the surrounding streets or take a short walk from the larger public lots to avoid the stress of traffic.
We would love to have you! Our large communal table is quite popular for those needing a laptop-friendly environment. We have Wi-Fi available to keep you connected. Just a heads-up that while we have some power plugs, they are limited, so it is always a good idea to come with a full battery just in case.
If you are looking for a quiet and focused atmosphere, we recommend visiting on a weekday morning shortly after we open or during dinner time. The warehouse can get quite lively and echoey during the midday lunch rush when the crowd is at its peak.
